It was a beautiful evening for socializing and learning more about wildlife when Friends members gathered at the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge on Saturday, November 9, 2024, to enjoy s’mores, hot chocolate, and fun activities during S’mores & More, a Friends members-only after-hours event.
Attendees roasted marshmallows over a roaring fire and then constructed s’mores from the ingredients provided. Bananas Foster Boats and Hot Cinnamon Apple packets were also available to cook over the fire for those wanting a change of pace from the traditional s’mores experience. Delicious gourmet hot chocolate was provided by City Kitchen.
This year, we brought back owl pellets, a popular activity for both children and adults. Participants were set up at a station with their own pellet, along with an educational guide, to discover what owls eat.
A knowledgeable volunteer led a hike after the sun went down to listen for the wildlife that come to life at night at the Nature Center. Hikers also took part in spotlighting with a provided flashlight to try to find how many eyes were observing them from the foliage.
Members who wanted to stargaze were directed to a dark location near the Hardwicke Interpretive Center to see what stars, constellations, and planets they could view with the help of a specialized app. The Nature Center is the perfect place to stargaze without the light pollution of the city obstructing your view.
Thank you to our volunteers and Nature Center staff for helping make this such a special event.
We are planning some fun events for 2025, so watch your inbox for upcoming details.
