Venture Into the Wild: The North Country

Experience the unexplored backyard of the Refuge.

We invite our members to a truly unique installment of our Behind the Gates series. This time, we are heading into what we call the “North Country” of the Refuge. It is a place that elicits that raw sense of wildness we all crave, tucked right here within our urban backyard.

If you have ever hiked Cross Timbers Trail and looked out at the vast expanse to the north, wondering what lies beyond, that is precisely where we are headed. This is a wild and new experience, featuring more deer trails and opportunities for exploration. Whether you choose to follow our guide or strike out on your own, this is your chance to see a side of the refuge rarely seen by the public.

Know Before You Go

To ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience in this rugged terrain, please review the following details:

  • Terrain & Difficulty: This is a “wild” hike. Expect uneven ground and narrow deer trails rather than maintained paths.
  • Accessibility: Due to the rugged nature of the North Country, this event is not suitable for small children or individuals with mobility challenges.
  • Facilities: There are no facilities (restrooms or water stations) available at this location. Please plan accordingly.
  • Safety Requirements: For communication and navigation, all hikers must bring a personal cell phone.
  • The Buddy System: You may choose to join the guided hike or venture out on your own. If you choose to explore independently, we strongly prefer the Buddy System for your safety.
  • Age Requirement: All attendees must be 13 years of age or older.
